SM 101: A Realistic Introduction

With a medical background, Wiseman takes a detailed look at the health and safety risks of different aspects of BDSM (not just SM). Some of the information about Sexually Transmitted Diseases is outdated, but Wiseman’s introductory guide remains one of the most thorough and helpful resources, especially for people new to BDSM. A few simple line drawings are used to demonstrate safe bondage ties and key equipment.

Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns:

“The Romance and Sexual Sorcery of Sadomasochism”
by Philip Miller and Molly Devon. Mystic Rose Books 1995

“Screw the Roses” offers a humorous, irreverent overview of BDSM, both navigating the larger community and how-to tips for the bedroom. Hundreds of photographs and illustrations include significant amounts of nudity that’s included more for amusement than strictly educational purposes. Narrations of fictional scenes may seem pornographic to some readers. If you’re bored with Wiseman’s relatively dry, 101 textbook style, then “Screw the Roses” adds more entertainment. Some Christians may prefer to avoid the “sexual sorcery” and jokey references to the 10 commandments.

Pulling Back the Shades:

Erotica, Intimacy, and the Longings of a Woman’s Heart by Dr. Juli Slattery and Dannah Gresh. Moody Publishers 2014

Written specifically in response to 50 Shades, this book primarily addresses unrealistic fantasies in romance novels. Only one of the co-authors read 50 Shades, and there seems to have been little effort made to understand real BDSM as practiced in many loving, consensual relationships.

Discounted copies may be available from Moody Publishers.

BDSM and Christianity

BDSM and Christianity: A look into the subculture of BDSM related to being a Christian by Frank Corso 2019

This self-published work would benefit from additional editing, but the overlap between Christianity and BDSM is a subject that mainstream publishers have generally avoided. As a Leather Master with a Pentecostal background, Corso has decades of experience in the BDSM community. One of several titles by Corso, this book uses quotations from scripture and introduces key concepts about BDSM.
